Residents & Fellows Scholarship

DEADLINE EXTENDED TO FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 25th!

Program Overview

• Opportunity: DVSTS provides current fellows in training and residents the opportunity to participate in the Residents & Fellows Scholarship, offering tuition assistance to attend the 63rd STS Annual Meeting held from January 28 -31, 2027 in San Diego, California

• Total Awards: Three scholarships will be awarded as follows:
  • 1 ACGME Fellow
  • 1 non-accredited fellow (includes super-fellows at an ACGME Institution)
  • 1 General Surgery resident with a demonstrated interest in Cardiothoracic Surgery
  • Additional scholarships may be awarded at the discretion of the DVSTS Board for exceptional circumstances.

Scholarship Includes

• Stipend: A stipend of up to $1,500 will be provided to cover expenses related to attending STS 2027.
  • This stipend will be processed two weeks after the meeting, once proof of attendance, travel itinerary, and hotel confirmation are received.

Eligibility for Scholarship

• Applicants must be enrolled in a residency or fellowship program in the Delaware Valley Region at the time of the meeting.

• Applicants must complete the application, including agreement to the requirements and the following document uploads by September 25:
  • A letter from the applicant indicating your specific interest in attending the program and anticipated goals for the meeting
  • A signed support letter on letterhead from your program director confirming your status as a current resident or fellow in January 2027. The letter MUST state that the candidate does not have internal funding from their program to attend the meeting.

Terms of Acceptance & Travel Information

• Attendance: Acceptance of this scholarship requires the awardee to attend the STS Annual Meeting and provide proof of such. While attendance of the entire meeting is highly encouraged, applicants must attend at least half of the meeting days to qualify for reimbursement.

• Travel & Lodging: Scholarship recipients must organize their own travel and lodging and submit a copy of their final travel itinerary, including flight details, to Catherine Mikelson at cmikelson@dvsts.org by Friday, December 18, 2026. Failure to do so will result in the forfeiture of the scholarship.

• Cancellations: Scholarships are limited. If you are unable to attend the STS Annual Meeting, please notify DVSTS immediately by emailing Catherine Mikelson at cmikelson@dvsts.org so the scholarship can be offered to another resident or fellow on the waiting list.

Registration

• Scholarship recipients must register for the conference within two weeks of receiving the acceptance email and send confirmation to DVSTS. If you have been accepted for a scholarship and have not registered for the conference within two weeks of receiving your acceptance email, your scholarship will be forfeited and offered to someone on the waitlist.

Important Dates & Deadlines

• September 25, 2026: Application deadline.

• October 5, 2026: Applicants will be notified of acceptance via email, and winners will be introduced at the Educational Event on Thursday, October 22, 2026. Waitlisted applicants will be notified as well.

• Within 2 weeks of email acceptance: Registration deadline.

• December 4, 2026: Payment information deadline (US applicants must submit their completed W-9 form).

• December 27, 2026: Travel information deadline (Submit your travel itinerary to Catherine Mikelson at cmikelson@dvsts.org).

• January 28 – 31, 2027: Attend STS 2027 in San Diego, CA
